The brief was to keep the original front section of this large terrace house in tact and completely demolish the rear. This proved to be a challenging engineering task. Our building skills were tested, as we had to prop up the adjoining properties and keep the risk and inconvenience to neighbours at an absolute minimum.
Through thoughtful engineering and clever building knowledge accumulated over the years this project proved to be a success for all concerned. Once the shell was constructed, the interiors and finishes could be completed with haste and finesse within the fixed building schedule.
The façade of this grand terrace was restored to the traditional style, while the modern rear extension provided a spacious and elegant addition with doors and windows opening to the full expanse of the rear courtyard. A central interior courtyard flooded the house with natural light and cross ventilation, completing the stylish modern feel.
Tight for space, the rear double garage was designed to convert to a modern outdoor entertaining space. This was achieved by installing a mechanized sliding roof and large pivoting doors that swing back to reveal this extra surprise package!
